Hawai’i Health Community Partnership Provides Faster Access to Lab Results

Honolulu, HIM- Hawai‘i physicians will soon be able to access laboratory results within minutes, rather than days, thanks to a new partnership between the Hawai‘i Health Information Exchange (HHIE), Hawai‘i Medical Services Association (HMSA), and Applied Research Works (Cozeva®).
Effective January 21st, 2015, three groups will partner to supply faster lab results from Diagnostic Lab Services and Clinical Labs of Hawaii to HMSA providers and members. This unprecedented partnership will allow providers to access labs through Cozeva within one day after the labs are loaded through HHIE.
By February 2, 2015, Cozeva hopes to refresh labs every Monday through Friday approximately every ten minutes. While the more frequently refreshed labs are currently only available to providers, Cozeva plans to make the more refreshed labs available to members of HMSA as well. Previously, lab results for members of HMSA were loaded and refreshed directly into Cozeva on a monthly basis. Now, the lab results will flow through HHIE and refresh in Cozeva on a daily basis. Having access to lab data sooner will reduce duplicate testing, and increase access to information for all HMSA providers and members. With timely information at their fingertips, the member’s care team can make responsive, informed decisions about care and treatment for their members without having to chase down lab results, saving time, reducing costs, and improving outcomes.
Each organization involved in the push to hasten lab access expressed their approval:
“Giving health care providers the ability to access and share important information is key to better decision making and better coordinated care,” says HMSA Medical Director John Baleix, M.D. “By partnering with Hawaii HIE and Cozeva, providers who can’t afford to create expensive interfaces on their own will now have the ability to better serve our members and all of their patients.”
“Through our Health eNet suite of services, we are changing the way health care is delivered in Hawai‘i,” said Christine Sakuda, Executive Director of the Hawai‘i Health Information Exchange. “Our mission is to improve health care in our state by providing accurate, real-time clinical data, so providers can make timely, informed decisions about the care of their patients. Our partnership with HMSA and Cozeva will enhance our efforts to develop a ubiquitous clinical information system that connects various electronic medical records (EMRs) and enables faster and more efficient decision-making, resulting in a higher quality of care and better patient outcomes.”
Gregg A. Shimomura, M.D., Medical Director of the Pacific Medical Administrative Group (PMAG) stated, "PMAG’s 750+ physicians enthusiastically welcome real-time lab information for their patients. This tremendous accomplishment will improve patient care and quality outcomes for the people of Hawaii and we applaud ARW, HMSA, and the HHIE in completing this complicated task."
“We’re fully interoperable with the HHIE. As a community health record, Cozeva was designed for collaboration, so we’re very pleased to be able to partner with HHIE and HMSA in this way to provide timely information for HMSA providers and members here in Hawaii,” said Shaibal Roy, CEO of
Applied Research Works.
